Getting old is what we all look forward to: but how many people are adequately prepared to cope with this stage of the human life? This is when they can no longer work at all or as hard as they would wish.

This book discusses the ageing process, the biological and physiological changes of old age, personal care and fitness, how to stay mentally and physically alert, and the right types of food and feeding habits. It debunks the common myths related to ageing and makes series of other recommendations on living a blissful life in old age.

The global economic crunch that has pervaded nations has led to the need for both parties in a martial relationship to go to work outside the home. Commonly expressed factors, and resultant problems of this phenomenon are those affecting women in paid employment. These are women in the upper and middle classes who hold managerial positions and spend most of their time in offices or other work related environment outside the home. The problems associated with the lower class women who also work outside, essentially as petty traders and the effect of their work on the quality of the life of their families are rarely discussed.

It is essential to note that whereas urban women in the middle and upper classes have the advantage of resources to employ some safety nets like day care centers, nursery schools and house-helps which cushion devastating effect of their absence from home on the children. The lower class women may not have this advantage. Also their husbands may not always be available to give assistance with domestic chores and childcare. These may have effects on the quality of life of the members of the family, especially the children. This study seeks to investigate the impact of low class women’s work on the quality of family life in urban and rural areas of Lagos State in Nigeria.

Results are presented to show how women’s work affects the quality of family life in selected urban and rural areas of the state.

Language, a unique accomplishment of man, sets him apart from other animals. Language, in man, is a vehicle of communication and it makes the exchange of ideas between one or more people possible. It enhances the progress of civilization and culture and helps in preserving the cultural heritage of mankind.

Man uses languages to create and maintain the individual identity of human groups which makes up the total society. It can be overstressed that:

The uniqueness of language derives from the fact that it is, at one and the same time, a capability man acquires through growing up as a member of a particular society and the major means by which he can acquire all other capabilities that make up the personal, social and cultural life of the particular community. (Doughty and Thornton 1973:43).

English language is Nigeria’s inherited official language. After independence, Nigeria retained English as the language of the Federal assembly and of the western and Eastern regional assemblies. English language is used as the language of commerce and High Court as well as being the medium of instruction in schools. In the northern regional assembly, English language and Hausa were used. In 1979, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba were accepted along with English language as the official languages of the state and national assemblies and they are now compulsorily taught in most secondary schools.

Various schools of thought have different conceptualizations of social change. All definitions express shifts in cultures, politics, economy, religion, education and other social systems created by the people which in turn influence these same peoples’ behavior. Although social change often represents attempted solutions to old problems, societies, cultures and institutions have set patterns of rules, values, attitudes and behavior that affect the people. Individuals are constantly being forced, persuaded, manipulated or socialized into compliance with these patterns of behavior and value from childhood through adolescence. Bearing in mind that education is needed for the intrinsic value of an individual to equip him for present and future challenges of life, only activities within the boundaries of Adult education can make him to be ready for the challenges. There is the need therefore, to channel adult education to assist the vulnerable groups in the face of the products of social change- urbanization, industrialization and technological advancement. This paper examines the social change process, the position of the powerless, voiceless and helpless. It identifies the implications for adult education so that everyone could contribute to improved family life, nation building, industrial peace, inter-tribal and international relations and ensure that individuals are properly adjusted to social change.

Recent trends in education show the need for fresh initiatives in education if general education and particularly adult education is to improve. The loss of professional ethics among teachers, decline in respect for teacher, decline in discipline among learners, inconsistent learners’ performance and inadequate government attention to education place serious challenges on adult educators who are expected to be effective and productive in teaching. This study is designed to determine how a teacher’s effectiveness may be measured and whether there is a consensus as to what really constitute the ‘distinguishing qualities’ of an effective teacher. It will also establish characteristics of an effective teacher as perceived by teacher educators, adult educators, inspectors of education and learners in Nigeria. The study is built on the grounds that teacher ‘peculiar marks’, which eventually determines behavior inside and outside the learning environment, may promote or hinder effective teaching.
